Quick start guide

Follow these instructions to get started using es2

Sign in to your Control Panel


What you see on your site

You control what es2 features you use on your website. To manage these features, go to the 'General settings' area of the Control Panel. By ticking or un-ticking options you can or acctivate or deactivate any of the es2 features provided.


How your site will look

  • From the Control Panel Menu select 'Design and manage skins'
  • The 'Design and manage skins' dialogue box opens
  •  In the 'Select a skin' section under the 'Skins' tab, click on the skin you want to use. Your selection fills the 'Edit' box. To make it live click the 'Make live or reset all' tab and then click the 'Make your changes live!' button.

You can edit any skin except for the skin called 'Default'.


Creating your home page

  • From the Control Panel Menu select Home page
  • The Home page dialogue box opens
    - The Home page content box may be empty or it may have been pre-filled with default content.

Your home page content

Enter your home page content in the box using the tools provided or click 'Insert home page' to fill with default home page content. This may already have been done for you.

You will recognise many of the tools provided from common word processing applications and they will work in much the same way.

To save your changes

  • Click the 'Insert home page' button or 'Update home page' button if some content already exists.

To change your home page

Make your changes and click the 'Update home page' button.


Creating your first Website page

 

IMPORTANT! -  Set up some 'Custom menus' before you create any pages.

Before you start adding web pages, create some 'Custom menus' like: 'School information' or 'Pupils', 'Prospectus' or perhaps 'Clubs' and 'Policies'. You can create up to 25 custom menus with any title that you like!

Some of these 'Custom menus' will contain collections of pages and some may just link directly to a page, a document or even another website.

Start creating web pages

  • From the Control Panel Menu select 'Website pages'
  • The 'Website pages' dialogue box opens
    - The 'Website pages' input boxes are empty.

Page title

  • Enter a Page title in the box. This enables you to identify and locate the page when you need to edit it.
  • Leave the default setting as 'Do not include title on page'.

Your page content

Enter your page content in the box using the tools provided. You will recognise many of them from common word processing applications and they will work in much the same way.

Menus

  • Enter a menu title for your page. If no menu title is entered, your page will not appear on your web site.

If you see the automatically generated tab 'Site pages' appear in your menu, you haven't associated your page or pages with a 'Custom menu'. Leaving your pages inside 'Site pages' is not a very good idea as these pages are effecctively hidden away and your visitors will not be able to find them very easily.

Parent/Child pages

Do not change this section for your first page.

Pages grouped with a 'Parent' page appear together in the main navigation menus as a level 3 menu item.

Start and end dates

By setting dates, you can control when your page is displayed or when it disappears from view. If a page 'expires' or reaches the end date it will still remain available to edit. You can change the end dates to re-display the page .

The end date automatically sets itself to exactly one year into the future. Click on the calendar icon or input box to select a new date, or enter a date by typing into the box provided. The date must be typed in this format: d/m/y (i.e., 26/2/2008 or 26/02/08).

  • If you do not want your page to expire at the end date, tick the 'Tick here if you do not want this page to expire.' box. This will be the case for nearly all of your web pages.

Publish this page

You can decide whether or not to publish this page on your website. If you tick 'Publish this page', your page content will be displayed on your website immediately it is saved. Un-ticking 'Publish this page' will remove the page from the website. You will still be able to edit this page.

To save your changes

  • Click one of the 'Save content' buttons.

Note: On first save, your content will disappear from the form. Simply select it from the drop-down menu at the top and click 'Select page'. The page content will appear.

  • Repeat the steps above to add further pages.

Using other features

Other features such as News, Events calendar and FAQ’s are designed to use the same basic tools, so learning one area will quickly allow you to enter content in all other areas.

Many of the other tools provided, such as 'Picture galleries' and 'Plug-ins' have guidance and instructions notated within them or may have more information available on this Information site.
